John Paul II International Airport in Kraków – Balice is the biggest regional airport in Poland.
It dates back to 1964, when military authorities shared 10 ha for needs of a civil entity and
granted authorizations for using aviation facilities. In this year, the first scheduled PLL LOT
aircraft landed there. In the neighbourhood of this airport, there is located the 8th Military
Transport Aviation Base.
Thanks to this airport, a lot of tourists have an opportunity to explore the fantastic city of
Cracow and not only this one – you can travel from there to other cities situated in the
southern of Poland.
From year to year, the Balice airport gets bigger – it is regularly renovated to increase its
opportunities and the comfort of tourists and employees. In 2019 the aircraft parking was
reconstructed. Also in this year, this airport handled up 8 410 817 of passengers – that is
24% (1 641 448) more than in 2018. On average, daily handled up there were 23 043 of
people. The biggest number in one day was 31 575.
In the previous year, there was also opened a base airline of Wizz Air. This is one of the
reasons why the airport could expand its offer to even 40 more destinations. These most
popular ones were: London, Frankfurt, Warsaw, Oslo and Munich.
In 2020, we can predict opening 15 new air services, which means there can be even 8 989
094 more of passengers.
